Over 400 people gathered to celebrate St Joseph’s School 50th Jubilee and Reunion of past pupils and Sisters of the Mission.

The net had been cast wide to include music and speech pupils of the Sisters of the Mission and also the boarders and Juvienists of the early days. Nearly forty Sisters attended the reunion.

The Sisters and school pupils had prepared classrooms with displays of drawings, photographs, and family trees of the old established families who had attended the school.

Friday night started with a wine and cheese get together and the next day a Thanksgiving Mass was celebrated by Bishop Delargey, Monsignor Kennedy, Fathers P. Keane, Palich, Wood, Daly and Keane.

Buses and cars left for a tour of the town and district and returned to the Town Hall for a luncheon.

An official opening ceremony took place that afternoon, included in the party was Mrs M. Irwin, Rev. Fr. Catcheside, Mr and Mrs McGlade, Mrs and Mrs W. F. Birch, and Fr. P. Keane.

On Sunday a special Mass of Remembrance was held for deceased teachers, parents and pupils.

Highlights of the weekend included:

  • The two oldest pupils present ringing the bell.
  • The hearty singing of the old hymns specially chosen for the Masses.
  • The rain holding off until the close of Mass on Sunday.
  • The obvious enjoyment of the Sisters who took part in all the functions.
